An invitation to
consider being a part of the Peace and Social Justice Commission for
St. Matthias
The Peace
and Social Justice Commission enables the parishioners to fulfill
the service mission of the parish. This Commission focuses on the
needs of the economically poor, the disabled, and the fragile. Our
mission is to assure that all parishioners are invited to respond to
the needs of our brothers and sisters through the various committees
that serve under this commission.
Our Outreach Program is always in need of
volunteers to aid in the planning of, organizing the collection of,
and distribution of goods and financial assistance to the needy of
the community of Crown Point.
Some of our ministries include:
-
The Food Pantry assists families who are in
need of temporary assistance with obtaining food. Our
pantry provides only non-perishable goods. On average we
assist 2-3 families each week.
-
The Angel Tree is a program that helps the
Outreach Program in providing Christmas gifts for the needy.
Angel Tree recipients are compiled from agencies who have
verified the need of the recipients receiving the gifts or are a
family that is referred by one of our parishioners who can
confirm their true need.
-
Easter, Thanksgiving July Food Baskets - During
these holidays and in the middle of summer our parishioners fill
grocery bags full of specific items for families in need. These
bags are coordinated and organized in our large hall by Terri
and Marissa Williams who along with many other parishioners
distribute the food to the needy.
-
Nursing Home Ministry - We have several
volunteers who visit Wittenburg Home to assist Catholic
residents celebrate Mass each month and then distribute Holy
Eucharistic to residents unable to attend the Mass itself. Mass
at Wittenberg is held on the third Thursday of each month at
10:00 am in the Chapel. If you are interested in this important
ministry please contact the parish office to talk with one of
our volunteers.
-
Souper Bowl Sunday - One Super Bowl Sunday
weekend our youth are in the narthex of the church after each
Mass asking for $1 donation to go toward the charity of choice
of our youth. Please help support our youth by donating to
their charities.
